NIGERIA INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY 2021

Image
National Flag of The Federal Republic of Nigeria In the early hours of Saturday the 1st of October, 1960, "the Union Jack" was lowered, hoisting and flying high the green and white flag of Nigeria-- designed by Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi. The ceremony of independence was not only ceremonial but the laying of foundation and putting in motion the locomotive towards nation-building of a politically independent state. The desire for self determination and aspiration which the country through the efforts of her political leaders and activists sought after and eagerly advanced in the pre-independence and colonial era was however truncated as a result of the ugly events and political uproar that greeted the novel independent state in the West African subregion. The leaders who sang the uniformed tone of patriotism became a replica of slides in the dirge and ballad of regionalism and ethnic politics as promoted by the NPC, NCNC and the AG. The country was thrown into a political rigmarole; t...

IN THE LANGUAGE THEY UNDERSTAND

Opinion President Muhammadu Buhari during operational visit to troops in Maiduguri, Borno State Finally, the brand of President Muhammadu Buhari which Nigerians have been craving for is gradually manifesting. After months and years of crying bitter tears of lamentation to the bloc in Aso Rock (popularly known as The Presidency) to present the president to the Nigerian public to see and hear from him, Muhammadu Buhari is now speaking to the Nigerian public. Not only to the public but also to the criminals in the language they understand. The President which Nigerians have always craved for and wished they had; is a president who talks to his people and meets with his people. A president who takes action. A president who is seen in Nigeria and not only on screen from Aso Rock (or a recorded president). We are gradually witnessing that president.Isn't it beautiful? Nigerians are not demanding for much. All we want is a secured Nigeria guaranteed by a president who feels, talks and mee...

INVESTIGATE JOURNALISM AND PUBLIC RELATIONS AT A CROSSROAD IN NIGERIA

Image
Opinion Tijani Hassan Abdulkarim To enable us to understand the concept of public relations in its simplest form, Dr. Cosmos Eze during one of his lectures on Public Relations: Copy and Media, opined that: "doing is very important; but there must be a saying after the doing". I'm sure the members of my class who attended the lecture can reminisce on the impact of "saying"  as far as the practice of public relations is concerned. Although, the practice of public relations in Nigeria and to be precise, the Northern part of the country have been very unstable over the years. This is hinged on the activities of people who are either recruited or self employed as media ambassadors to Politicians, Business tycoons, the Armed Forces and even the current trend of activist behind keyboards parading themselves on social media. Their activities falls below professionalism. They fail to beam their torchlight to enable them decipher the distinguishing thin line between pro...
