Nigeria Civil War: Conspiracies and Interest of the World Powers

Image
Nigeria Flag and Biafra flag used between 1967-1970 Obviously, war is a business of interest. Just like the styled Russian invasion of Ukraine over fear of the west domination of the geopolitics of the defunct Soviet union, Nigeria had her fair share of international politicking of how the super powers wrestle for relevance in the post World War II era when the cold war peaked, climaxing into the Nigerian-Biafran Civil war of secession. As Chinua Achebe summarily spelled out in his book "There was a country", Harold Wilson, the PM of Britain maintained a firm stance about one the Queen's priced colony. UK would not support the breaking away of Nigeria in the guise of secession. That would mean, their preplanned neocolonialism programme would be challenged. Although, the BBC's Rick fountain in a story on Monday January 3, 2000 titled "secret papers reveals Biafra intrigue," shows how Britain would and currently was more interested in her oil holding than a ...

By: Mukhtar Garba Kobi (08185113672) Tobacco cigarettes  Tobacco was historically discovered by an European in person of Christopher Columbus in 1492, initially, it was only smoked by high-class personalities during festivities but Columbus took it back to Europe where it gained recognition. Smoking increased dramatically during world wars, it was supplied to troops for free mainly to boost their morale but later in the 20th century, it became less popular due to a rapid increase in its health effects. Several types of research were conducted and books published on the dangers of tobacco to health, some of which are Samuel Thomas in 1795, Benjamin Rush in 1798 and many more. LAW AND THE EVIL OF LAWYERS

Image
A gavel This may sound a bit controversial, but I've not seen a profession which promotes evil in the open like the legal profession. With the wig on, lawyers stand before the judge in defence of evil doers and plotters with a mandate of seeking their acquittal, using superior cunning arguments by looking for loopholes in the legal system and twisting the law for the the sole purpose of earning monetary reward from their clients. This can obviously, be attributed to their training. I presumed that one of the training would-be lawyers receive in the law school before being called to bar is how to tacitly playdown on their inherent personal conscience. This is what leaves me pondering over the degree of good conscience left in the legal practitioners. Don't get it twisted, a lot of morally sound lawyers are equally in the Profession across different chambers within the country. Unfortunately, close discerning will reveal how the Profession thrive best in deceit and feasting on th...

IMPENDING ASUU STRIKE: ONE TOO MANY

Opinion Reading the impression and expression written on the faces of Students across Nigerian Universities, studying different courses, especially in Bayero University, Kano on Friday 4th February, 2022, it was an obvious disposition of uncertainty. Apprehension littered the humid air. In small groups, Students conversed among themselves on a similar topic. "Are we really embarking on another ASUU strike?" was the the most frequently asked questions on campus as the first week of the second month in the new year gradually winds down. All across most Universities in Nigeria, the Academic Staff Union Of University popularly referred to as ASUU in the labour industry, met at an emergency Congress meeting on Thursday 3rd February, 2022 at the various branch levels. The discussion and deliberation centered on the report of Memorandum of Action (MoA) signed between the Federal government of Nigeria and the Union (FGN/ASUU) and the level of implementation thus far. The major issues...

...THE FUTURE

When we talk about the future, most of us including me always and most at times confuse it with having big dreams and  sitting loose waiting for such dreams to come to fruition without us laying solid foundation and struggling for it. Hear me loud this morning; one secret we were not told early is the fact that you should never expect the world to be good to you just because you're a good person. When you see a good person making it steadily towards their dreams, it means they did not wait for the world; they went for the world. Remember, the track to success is not always rosy. It is more than having good grades in the University.  Try to utilise this template: When you have a great dream, the genesis of your actions should be prayers. Never stop praying to the Almighty and most importantly,  never stop at prayers. Have a clear roadmap, look out for genius in your field and study them. Make them your role model. If they're in close proximity, contact them let them mentor...

NIGERIA INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY 2021

Image
National Flag of The Federal Republic of Nigeria In the early hours of Saturday the 1st of October, 1960, "the Union Jack" was lowered, hoisting and flying high the green and white flag of Nigeria-- designed by Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi. The ceremony of independence was not only ceremonial but the laying of foundation and putting in motion the locomotive towards nation-building of a politically independent state. The desire for self determination and aspiration which the country through the efforts of her political leaders and activists sought after and eagerly advanced in the pre-independence and colonial era was however truncated as a result of the ugly events and political uproar that greeted the novel independent state in the West African subregion. The leaders who sang the uniformed tone of patriotism became a replica of slides in the dirge and ballad of regionalism and ethnic politics as promoted by the NPC, NCNC and the AG. The country was thrown into a political rigmarole; t...

IN THE LANGUAGE THEY UNDERSTAND

Image
Opinion President Muhammadu Buhari during operational visit to troops in Maiduguri, Borno State Finally, the brand of President Muhammadu Buhari which Nigerians have been craving for is gradually manifesting. After months and years of crying bitter tears of lamentation to the bloc in Aso Rock (popularly known as The Presidency) to present the president to the Nigerian public to see and hear from him, Muhammadu Buhari is now speaking to the Nigerian public. Not only to the public but also to the criminals in the language they understand. The President which Nigerians have always craved for and wished they had; is a president who talks to his people and meets with his people. A president who takes action. A president who is seen in Nigeria and not only on screen from Aso Rock (or a recorded president). We are gradually witnessing that president.Isn't it beautiful? Nigerians are not demanding for much. All we want is a secured Nigeria guaranteed by a president who feels, talks and mee...

INVESTIGATE JOURNALISM AND PUBLIC RELATIONS AT A CROSSROAD IN NIGERIA

Image
Opinion Tijani Hassan Abdulkarim To enable us to understand the concept of public relations in its simplest form, Dr. Cosmos Eze during one of his lectures on Public Relations: Copy and Media, opined that: "doing is very important; but there must be a saying after the doing". I'm sure the members of my class who attended the lecture can reminisce on the impact of "saying"  as far as the practice of public relations is concerned. Although, the practice of public relations in Nigeria and to be precise, the Northern part of the country have been very unstable over the years. This is hinged on the activities of people who are either recruited or self employed as media ambassadors to Politicians, Business tycoons, the Armed Forces and even the current trend of activist behind keyboards parading themselves on social media. Their activities falls below professionalism. They fail to beam their torchlight to enable them decipher the distinguishing thin line between pro...

#ENDSARS PROTEST: Lessons for effective governance, active Citizen participation and Nation-building

Image
Opinion #EndSars caption adopted by Twitter during the protest in October 2020 Photo Credit: Arise News The diamond jubilee independence anniversary of Nigeria celebrated on 1st of October, 2020 can be described as an anniversary not well marked afterwards. The reason is not far-fetched as the country for the first time in a long while experienced a serial civil disobedience campaign under the banner of "#ENDSARS". #ENDSARS protest which started as a call to checkmate the excesses of the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS); a unit of the Nigerian Police saddled with the responsibility of preventing kidnapping and robbery crimes across the length and breadth of the country, snowballed into a mass protest. It's demands transcended a wider  scope as captured by the topic of this paper. #ENDSARS protest created an avenue for active Citizen participation. Civil demonstration which is a core aspect of democracy enabled the masses to voice out their grievances and other challenges...

Image
Updated from December, 2019 The circumstances surrounding the recent abduction and subsequent release of 344 school boys from Government Science Secondary school, Kankara in Katsina state have not only exposed the breach and mistrust in our security system as a nation, but have equally presented to us another highly sophisticated terror group. The operations of which are allied to the dreaded Boko Haram terrorist group. It should be put on record that top on the agenda and priorities of any responsible government is the protection of life and property of her citizens. This can be visible by ensuring a peaceful environment to facilitate other rights and privileges of her citizens such as the right to education. Furthermore, to ensure a peaceful atmosphere, government have been saddled with the supreme power of monopoly of use of force to counter any attempt of internal insurrection or external aggression. The aim is to ensure the security of her citizens as the primary responsibility....

FIGHTING CORRUPTION OR OPPRESSING HUMAN RIGHTS

Image
Opinion Article President Muhammadu Buhari Last week saw the Carnival-like celebration of the international anti-corruption and human rights day in Nigeria. The significance behind marking international days should be for us to recounts the level of success we have achieved or retardation we have faced in achieving the objectives that set those days aside from others. While the finger points squarely at the politicians for being the primary perpetrators of corruption, the Nigerian masses are crying loud for their fundamental human rights being short-lived by the government and her mecinaries. Ahmad Lawan, President of the Senate Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker House of Representatives The 9th National Assembly of Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila seem to be fast and furious when it comes to initiating and passing bills. The regulation of the Social Media bill which is intended by  the sponsor to curb the peddling of fake news and hate speech have not only cau...
